The Greenville Avenue St Patrick's Day Parade
has over a 25 year tradition in Dallas. The parade is organized
by the Greenville Avenue Area Business Association
and has become a beloved community event that attracts
thousands of spectators and participants each year.
The parade was started in 1979 by a group of lower
Greenville merchants and restaurant's, led by Tom Stephenson.
Unorganized as they were, they loosely created the
very first St Patrick's Day block party and festival.
Local residents strolled along Lower Greenville enjoying
a variety of food, refreshments, including green beer.
It is a nice community event for those who enjoy a
good celebration. It brought lots of needed new customers
and revenue to the then still budding Lower Greenville.
In the fall of 1987, many merchants who still supported
the idea of the parade had formed the Greenville Avenue
Area Business Association (G.A.A.B.A.). This organization
was formed to help unify area business and promote
the Greenville Avenue area.
Over the next several years the parade continued to
evolve. The City of Dallas has become one of the official
sponsors of the event. Several entries became real
crowd favorites over the years, including the "Patty
O'Furniture Psycho Killer Drill Team" with their
precision movements and hilarious routines and the
Bula Boys with their irreverent portrayals of current
events.
So, whether it is grandmother's tap dancing or leprechauns
on Harleys you can be sure this parade offers something
for everyone's taste.
The parade is traditionally held the Saturday proceeding
St. Patrick's Day at 11:00 am.
